1880 U.S. Census Records

for Grimshaw Families and Individuals

Home Page

The 1880 U.S. Census is an outstanding resource for researching family lines of earlier immigrants to this country. Not only does the census provide the name and location of the head of the household, but it also provides the names and relationship to the head, of the other residents of the household. Also included are the occupation, country of birth, and birth country of parents of all the individuals in the household.

A search of an electronic database of the 1880 Census yields a total of 605 Grimshaws living in the U.S. Between 65 and 70 are listed as single persons or as "extended family" members. The remainder (about 540 persons) are in "nuclear families" (husband, wife, or child.) Approximately 120 families are represented.

*(Since there is obvious double-reporting of two to three families, the exact number is between 595 and 600.)

Description of the 1880 U.S. Census

The following description of the 1880 census is taken from the "Help" menu of the database.

The compact disc version of the 1880 U.S. census contains an alphabetical index of individuals; a list of individuals grouped by household; and a browse feature that shows neighboring households in enumeration order on either side of the household or across the street from where the individual lived.

This census on CD lists individuals by last name, first name(s), relationship to the head of the household, calculated birth year, gender, race, birthplace (state or country if born outside the United States), and census place (state, county, and in most instances the town). Searches use a standardized last name and given name, birth year with a one-to-five year search option, gender, race, birthplace, and census place. (See the explanation of the individual search screen in resource file help).

The household view shows the location of the house, including the town or city, county, and state. The full source citation showing how to find the family in the original census is also displayed and includes the Family History Library film call number and the page on the film where the family can be found. The National Archive film number is also given on the source list.

Information about each individual within a household includes the full name, relationship to the head of the household, gender, marital status, race, age, and birthplace, usually a state or country. The household record includes the person's occupation and the birthplaces of that person's father and mother.

There are also individuals enumerated within institutions or not listed within a normal household. This includes alms houses, hospitals, schools, religious orders, and military stations to mention a few. The census headers do not always identify these as institutions, but the institutions are recognizable because of a long list of names that sets them apart from regular households. Individuals within an institution are usually listed as an inmate, patient, soldier, or some other title that identifies them as belonging to a particular group.

The census was recorded on a preprinted form with specific information requested from each person enumerated. It was the census taker's responsibility to see that the information was gathered on each person. Note that information contained in the original census, such as education, health, and property, was not extracted and is not included in this census index. Use the source information to go back to the original census record on microfilm to see if additional information was included.

Tabular Listing of Grimshaws in the 1880 Census

The approximately 600 Grimshaws in the 1880 Census are shown in the large table (Table 1) at the bottom of this webpage. The order of presentation is by the state in which the individuals were living.

The order of presentation of the families and individuals is the same as the order of occurrence of the individuals and heads of families in the Census, which is by location within the state. The code (AR-1, CA-1, etc.) references the individual or family unit consecutively in each state. The birthdates in the table were derived by subtracting indicated ages from 1880, so are only approximate.

As noted there is obvious double reporting of several individuals. Thus the "true" number of Grimshaw living in the U.S. in 1880 is probably between 595 and 600.

Distribution of Grimshaw Among the States

The number of Grimshaws in each of the 27 states (and one territory) where they were recorded (of the 39 that existed in 1800) are shown in Figure 1. The state with the most Grimshaws, by far, was New York, with 146 individuals (including New York City.)

State-by-State Description of Grimshaw Families and Individuals

The table at the bottom of this webpage was derived from the National Index of the electronic database. It is very useful in providing an overall picture of the Grimshaws and where they lived in the U.S. in 1880. The database also includes more detailed information on each household thd the individuals living there, such as occupation and birthplace of parents. These household records, which also show the location of the household as well as the reference (microfilm and page number) of the census record, are presented in four companion webpages as follows:

Arkansas to Louisiana: 12 states, 42 households

Massachusetts to New Jersey: 8 states, 55 households

New York to Pennsylvania: 3 states, ___ households

Rhode Island to Wisconsin: 6 states, ___ households

These webpages can easily be reached by clicking on the hyperlinks in the above list.
