As a means of gaining as much insight as possible into the immigration of Grimshaws into North America, and their subsequent "radiation" (family growth and movement through succeeding generations), several indexes for records of immigration to the U.S. were examined for this website.

This survey indicates that Grimshaws have been coming to America since the mid-1600s, less than 50 years after the founding of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia. It appears that more than 130 Grimshaw immigrants entered the U.S. (and the preceding colonies) between 1651 and 1880.

Sources Surveyed

Four commonly available (published) sources of information on immigrants to the U.S. were surveyed for Grimshaw entries -- Bentley, Filby (multiple volumes) Glazier and Filby, and Glazier and Tepper (multiple volumes). The Grimshaw immigrants to the U.S. through 1880, as indicated in these four sources, are tabulated below. The references are described in detail in a companion webpage.

This webpage was originally posted in August 2000; a supplemental webpage bringing the records from Filby up to date through 2002, Part 1 was posted in February 2002. The results of the review of the four references are tabulated in the table shown below. As noted, additional detail on each immigrant is given on a companion webpage. The Filby reference numbers are tabulated at the bottom of this webpage

The table contains 89 Grimshaw entries, extending from 1651 to 1880, although many are obvious duplicates (the same Grimshaw immigrant recorded in different references). The number of "unique" Grimshaw immigrants appears to be about 60 or 65. (The names are spelled in the table as in the original reference). If it is assumed that just half of the total number of Grimshaws who immigrated are "captured" in these records, no fewer than 130 Grimshaws immigrated to the U.S. during that 230-year period.
