From Scioto County, Ohio in About 1870
Several of the children of Richard and Nancy (Rickett) Grimshaw, who lived in Scioto County, Ohio, left that state and "went west" to Missouri in about 1870. Richard and Nancy Grimshaw are the subject of a companion webpage. It is likely that many of the siblings left together and others arrived later. Much of the information on these family lines comes from an extensive biography of one of the grandchildren of Richard and Nancy Grimshaw, Arthur Wood Grimshaw, which was prepared by Arthur's second wife, Naomi Cavendar Grimshaw. According to this biography, the Grimshaw and related families that went to Missouri from Ohio were Matthew Joseph Grimshaw, his brothers Wes and Ben and their families, their sister and her husband (Nancy and Joe Stritmatter), and two of the sisters of of Matthew's wife, Eliphel (Morris) Grimshaw, and their husbands -- Eunice and Theopholus Sloan and Emily and Jeff Field.
Although the original group of immigrants planned to join their mother's relatives (the Ricketts) at Meadville, Missouri, they stopped short of that community and settled in Macon County, northwest of Macon, instead. Matthew Joseph and Eliphel Grimshaw settled on the Chariton River near Peggy Ford. Apparently other families settled on the hills near the river. Apparently because of strong ties that developed among the families during their many miles of travel together, they established homes in relatively close proximity.

| Where Did the Grimshaw Families Settle in Missouri? |
The families were traveling west across northern Missouri when they made their decision to stop and settle near the Chariton River, northwest of the county seat of Macon. Figure 1 shows the location of Macon in northern Missouri. Figure 2 shows Macon County boundaries, and Figure 3 shows the area settled by the families in more detail.

Figure 2. Macon County, Missouri, showing the county boundaries and the county seat, Macon. The Grimshaws settled northwest of Macon, just west of the community of Cash.
Figure 3. Closer view of the area settled by the Grimshaw families. Matthew Joseph Grimshaw's land was located on the east bank of the "old channel" of the Chariton River, on the loop just east of the name "Panther Creek".
The family of Mathew E Grimshaw settled on a quarter section of land in Section 16, Valley Township, Macon County, Missouri (Figure 4).

Topographic maps of Section 16 of Valley Township are provided in Figures 5 and 6.

John Wesley Grimshaw and his wife, Rebecca (Tritt) Grimshaw, also migrated to Missouri; their photo is shown in Figure 11. John and Matthew's sister, Nancy, and her husband, Joseph StritMatter emigrated to Missouri as well (Figure 12).

| How Close Did the Families Get to Their Original Destination of Meadville? |
The families were traveling together with the apparent destination of Meadville, whose location is indicated by the red star in Figure 12. It is apparent that they were Within about 40 miles of their destination when they made the decision to stop and settle in Macon County.
